BUFFALO, N.Y. – Darmetrius Braggs, 19, of Buffalo, was sentenced to 60 months in prison today for possession of a firearm during the commission of drug trafficking activity.
Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., announced the sentence imposed by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.
The Buffalo Police Department, led by Commissioner Daniel Derenda, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, directed by Special Agent-in-Charge Ashan Benedict, New York Field Division, conducted the investigation that led to Braggs’ conviction.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan T. Cullinane handled the case, revealing that officers had information on a robbery committed by Braggs at gunpoint on October 30, 2015.
Braggs was subsequently linked to a party on Freund Avenue in Buffalo, where he met undercover officers for an arranged marijuana purchase on November 7, 2015. After the defendant fled from the scene, police located him and recovered a firearm that strongly resembled images of firearms Braggs posted on social media.
During their search of the residence at 22 Freund Avenue, officers found multiple vials of what appeared to be marijuana as well as the loaded firearm in the backyard. The sentencing marks the end of a coordinated effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies to dismantle drug trafficking operations in Western New York.
