Grimy Times has learned that a Bridgeport man has pleaded guilty to narcotics distribution and gun possession charges. Branden Huertas, 39, was arrested on February 26, 2020, after a search of his vehicle and residence revealed quantities of narcotics and a loaded handgun.
According to court documents, in January 2020, law enforcement made two controlled purchases of cocaine from Huertas. His vehicle was searched and found to contain heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, marijuana, and ecstasy. A subsequent search of his residence revealed additional quantities of crack and heroin, items used to process and package narcotics for street sale, a loaded 9mm Taurus PT-92C semi-automatic handgun, and additional rounds of ammunition.
Huertas has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1998, with state convictions for drug, weapon, robbery, burglary, and larceny offenses, as well as federal convictions in 2015 for possession of a firearm by a felon and in 2019 for escape from custody.
At the time of his arrest, Huertas was on federal supervised release. He has since pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.
Huertas also faces additional penalties for violating the conditions of his supervised release. He has been detained since his arrest and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 19, 2021.
The matter has been investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and Connecticut State Police, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Clark. Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on this case as more information becomes available.
