A 5-year prison sentence has been handed down to Brandon Charley, a Prewitt, New Mexico man convicted of voluntary manslaughter in Indian Country. The sentence was handed down on June 30 by a federal judge.
According to court records, Brandon Charley got into an altercation with the victim and shot him from a motor vehicle in a remote area near Prewitt, New Mexico. The shooting occurred on the Navajo Nation, and both Charley and the victim are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation.
The case dates back to 2021, when Charley pleaded guilty on September 8, 2021, to the charges of voluntary manslaughter in Indian Country.
Following Charley’s imprisonment for five years and three months, he will be placed on supervised release for three years.
The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Joseph M. Spindle and Letitia Carroll Simms prosecuted the case.
The charges against Charley stem from a September 2021 incident in which he shot the victim from a motor vehicle in a remote area near Prewitt, New Mexico.
