Brandon Lee Romero, Robbery, Montana 2024

B Brandon Lee Romero, a 30-year-old man from Poplar, Montana, has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for his role in a violent crime that left a victim injured on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

According to court documents, Romero admitted to robbery after carjacking a truck and stabbing the driver on April 14, 2023. He pleaded guilty in August 2024 to the charge.

Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presided over the case. The government alleged that Romero’s victim, John Doe, was contacted by his sister and asked to pick up Romero for a ride because she didn’t want him at her residence. John Doe agreed and used his father’s truck to pick up Romero, but things took a violent turn when Romero pulled out two knives.

When John Doe attempted to drive away, Romero jumped into the truck bed, kicked out the back window, and stabbed the victim. The victim exited the truck, and Romero got into the driver’s seat, driving the stolen truck into Williams County, near Williston, North Dakota.

Law enforcement eventually caught up with Romero after a high-speed chase. He drove the vehicle into a ditch to avoid spike strips, submerged the vehicle in a creek, and fled on foot until ultimately surrendering.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, with Fort Peck Law Enforcement Services, the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office, and the Williston (N.D.) Police Department conducting the investigation.

Romero’s 57-month sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. The case serves as a reminder of the severity of crimes committed on Indian reservations and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.

This case is a prime example of the types of crimes that can occur on Indian reservations and the need for increased awareness and action to prevent such incidents in the future.
