Antonio Gary Angelo, Firearm Possession, South Dakota 2024

SIOUX FALLS – In a stunning reversal of fortune, Antonio Gary Angelo, 36, of Brandon, South Dakota, faced the cold, metallic walls of federal prison today after being sentenced for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on June 3, 2024, locked Angelo up for three years and one month followed by another three years of supervised release.

The saga began on June 30, 2023, when a traffic stop in Sioux Falls led to the discovery of a firearm on Angelo’s person. His non-compliance with law enforcement during the traffic stop, including refusal to provide his name and an attempted escape, only served to seal his fate. The search that ensued uncovered the illegal firearm.

Angelo was indicted by a federal grand jury in October 2023 and entered a guilty plea on March 7, 2024. His sentence included a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The Brandon man’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in May 2021, this initiative has prioritized fostering community trust, supporting organizations that prevent violence, and strategic enforcement.

This case was a product of a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Sioux Falls Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paige Petersen prosecuted the case with vigor.

With his sentence now complete, Angelo is to be remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service for execution of his term.
