In a disturbing case of gun violence, Brandon Rankin, 27, of Madison, Wisconsin, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to court documents, Rankin’s prior felony conviction was for robbery.

The incident occurred on February 2, 2021, when a Madison police officer pulled over Rankin’s vehicle following a traffic stop. The officer observed Rankin with a gun in his hand, and the defendant sped away, reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour. The vehicle went airborne over a speed bump and crashed into another car, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Rankin then fled the scene on foot and was apprehended with the assistance of a police K9. During the search of his vehicle, officers discovered an unloaded 9mm handgun, 4.4 grams of crack cocaine, and a substantial amount of cash. The charge against Rankin was the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted the case. At sentencing, U.S. District Judge William Conley found that Rankin possessed the gun in connection with a drug trafficking offense and deemed this course of conduct to be extremely dangerous. Judge Conley noted that the events in this case could have resulted in the death or serious injury of either Rankin or the occupant of the vehicle that he hit.

Rankin pleaded guilty to the charge on May 18, 2021.
