Branson, Mo. – In a stunning admission of guilt, Burton Cummings, 43, a former business owner from the Ozark region, pleaded guilty in federal court to tax evasion. Cummings, who dodged over $825,297.81 between 2013 and 2024, faced U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge Willie Epps, Jr., for his fraudulent activities.
Cummings failed to pay his income taxes completely, except for the year 2015. The interest and penalties have now accumulated, leaving a total debt of $1,604,729.02 owed to the United States. His deception involved making false statements to IRS Revenue Officers, submitting fraudulent forms, and intentionally avoiding filing tax returns.
According to the plea agreement, Cummings took significant cash withdrawals from his companies without disclosing his income. He even went so far as to admit to providing false collection statements to the IRS with the sole intent of evading his financial obligations.
Punishment for such a crime is severe under federal statutes. Cummings could be facing up to five years in federal prison without parole. The sentencing will ultimately be determined by the court based on advisory guidelines and other statutory factors following a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.
This case has been prosecuted with relentless determination by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney, while the IRS – Criminal Investigation unit conducted the thorough investigation that led to today’s charges.
Branson’s tax dodger will now have to face the consequences of his deceitful actions before the federal justice system.
