Brennan J. Thompson, a 43-year-old man from Cornwall Island, Ontario, has pleaded guilty to driving away from the Massena Port of Entry in Plattsburgh, New York.
On May 13, 2020, Thompson attempted to enter the United States from Canada in a silver Lincoln sedan. When asked to open the vehicle’s trunk for inspection, Thompson quickly accelerated away from the inspection booth, made a U-turn, and sped back into Canada.
Thompson was arrested on June 28, 2020, and has been in custody since that date. He faces up to 5 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to 3 years of post-imprisonment supervised release.
Chief United States District Judge Glenn T. Suddaby is scheduled to sentence Thompson on June 24, 2021. A defendant’s sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statute the defendant is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other factors.
Thompson’s guilty plea was announced by Acting United States Attorney Antoinette T. Bacon and Robert Dwyer, CBP Director of the Massena Port of Entry. The case was investigated by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer.
