A brazen bank robbery shook the streets of East Liverpool, Ohio, when Brian Keith Johnston, 41, of Calcutta, allegedly stormed into the Home Savings and Loan Company on May 29, 2014, and made off with $1,756.
According to the indictment, Johnston, a Calcutta native, entered the bank wearing a mask and demanded cash from the teller. The employee, fearing for their safety, handed over the money, and Johnston fled the scene.
The investigation into the robbery was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the East Liverpool Police Department, and the St. Clair Township Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney David M. Toepfer is leading the prosecution of Johnston, who faces a single count of bank robbery. If convicted, Johnston’s sentence will be determined by the court after reviewing factors specific to the case, including his prior criminal record, if any, and his role in the offense.
Johnston, if found guilty, could face a sentence not exceeding the statutory maximum. In most cases, the sentence will be less than the maximum. The exact sentence will be determined by the court after a thorough review of the case.
Johnston’s indictment is a reminder that bank robbery is a serious crime with severe consequences. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
An indictment is merely an accusation and is not evidence of guilt. Johnston is entitled to a fair trial, where the government will have to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The outcome of the trial is far from certain, and Johnston’s future hangs in the balance.
