Former Postal Carrier Sentenced in Bribery, Drug Distribution Scheme
In a shocking case of corruption, former postal carrier Briana Fugate, 27, of Cheektowaga, New York, was sentenced to 12 months in prison for her role in a bribery and drug distribution scheme.
According to court documents, Fugate accepted bribes to deliver what she believed to be drug shipments from the west coast. As she learned to recognize the parcels, she began opening them and selling the contents herself.
Fugate was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and worked out of the Central Park Station Post Office in the City of Buffalo. The defendant was arrested in 2015 after an undercover operation, during which she distributed a pound of stolen marijuana out of her mail truck while working her postal route.
Law enforcement agents discovered over 1,500 pieces of mail in Fugate’s car that had not been delivered. The defendant was on probation for a state larceny conviction at the time of her conduct.
The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations.
Fugate’s sentence is a reminder of the importance of public trust and the consequences of corruption. As a postal carrier, Fugate was entrusted with the responsibility of delivering mail to the community, but instead, she used her position for personal gain.
