Bribes for Green Cards Land Official 30 Months
SANTA ANA, California – In a shocking case of corruption, Mai Nhu Nguyen, a 48-year-old immigration service officer, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for soliciting thousands of dollars in bribes from immigrants seeking citizenship or lawful permanent resident status.
Nguyen, who worked at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) Santa Ana office for approximately eight years, took bribes from Vietnamese immigrants between 2011 and June 2013. In one particularly egregious case, she accepted $1,000 from an immigrant seeking a ‘Green Card’ and 200 egg rolls from another immigrant seeking citizenship.
The case against Nguyen is the result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General. The investigation revealed that Nguyen abused her power as an immigration service officer, who had the authority to approve or deny applications for immigration benefits.
Nguyen’s actions were a betrayal of the trust placed in her as a public servant. Her conviction serves as a stark reminder that corruption will not be tolerated in our society.
U.S. District Judge Josephine L. Staton handed down the sentence, bringing an end to Nguyen’s reign of corruption. The case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working together to root out corruption and bring perpetrators to justice.
The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. Together, we can ensure that our society remains free from corruption and that those who abuse their power are held accountable.
Nguyen is currently on leave from her position at USCIS and will serve her 30-month sentence. The case against her is a sobering reminder that the consequences of corruption are severe and that those who engage in such activities will be brought to justice.
