Bridgeport, CT – In a shocking case of felony gun possession, 51-year-old Albert Lopez pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. According to court documents, Lopez, who was residing in Bridgeport, was arrested on October 12, 2017, after members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force found a stolen .40 caliber pistol in his bedroom. Lopez was arrested on state and federal warrants related to a shooting incident in Bridgeport on September 9, 2017.
Lopez’s past convictions are nothing short of alarming. He has been convicted of multiple felony offenses in Connecticut state court and federal courts in both Connecticut and Pennsylvania. His previous convictions include assault with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, possession of contraband by an inmate, and possession of a firearm by a felon (twice).
In March 2008, Lopez was sentenced to 47 months of federal imprisonment for possession of a firearm by a felon, and in January 2013, he was sentenced to 72 months of imprisonment for possession of a firearm by a felon and for violating the conditions of his federal supervised release.
As part of his plea agreement, Lopez faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison. The sentencing, which has not been scheduled, is expected to be a harsh one, given Lopez’s extensive history of gun-related crimes.
The case has been investigated by the Bridgeport Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren C. Clark and Anastasia E. King are prosecuting the case.
The state charges against Lopez related to the September 9, 2017, shooting incident are still pending.
Lopez has been detained since his arrest, and his future is looking bleaker by the minute. As his sentencing date approaches, one thing is certain: the people of Bridgeport can rest a little easier knowing that this convicted felon is behind bars.
