Keshena Man Jailed for Attempted Murder

A Keshena man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a shooting on the Menominee Indian Reservation. Menom L. Powless-Brown, 19, was found guilty of assault with intent to murder after shooting another man in a residential area.

The incident occurred on March 13, 2021, when Powless-Brown intentionally discharged a 9mm semiautomatic handgun multiple times, striking the other man in the abdomen and his mother in the face. The victim sustained significant injuries in the attack.

Despite the severity of the crime, Senior United States District Judge William C. Griesbach imposed a 10-year sentence, citing Powless-Brown’s youth and lack of prior record. The United States had recommended a higher sentence, but Judge Griesbach deemed the 10-year term appropriate.

Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Maier prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Powless-Brown entered a guilty plea on September 10, 2021, and was sentenced on December 20, 2021. He will also serve 36 months of supervised release following his prison term.

The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of violent crime on individuals and communities. The Menominee Indian Reservation has experienced its share of violence in recent years, and this sentence is a step towards justice for the victims.
