Brittany Freeman, a 27-year-old mail carrier from Johnston City, Illinois, has been sentenced for her role in stealing rebate checks sent to customers along her routes.
Freeman, who was working for the U.S. Postal Service at the time of the crime, stole over $700 worth of rebate checks from Menard’s sent to customers in February and March 2020. The checks were stolen from mailboxes along her delivery route.
Surveillance cameras at a nearby Menard’s store captured Freeman using the rebate checks for herself soon after stealing them.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Peter T. Reed.
Brittany Freeman, of Johnston City, Illinois, was sentenced to three years’ probation and a $100 fine. She was also ordered to pay $704.10 in restitution to her victims.
According to U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft, ‘any tampering with the U.S. mail system is taken seriously, particularly when postal service employees abuse their position of trust.’
The case highlights the importance of protecting the integrity of the U.S. mail system and holding postal service employees accountable for their actions.
