Two Bronx gang members, Robert Wade and Darrius Christopher, have been sentenced to 14 years and over 11 years in prison respectively for their involvement in a shooting that left three innocent victims injured near Slattery Playground. The incident occurred on October 25, 2019, when the defendants opened fire on a group of young people.
Robert Wade was handed down a sentence of 168 months, while Darrius Christopher received 137 months for their roles in the shooting. Both were convicted following trial on December 7, 2022, of possessing ammunition after having previously been convicted of a felony and conspiracy to possess ammunition after having previously been convicted of a felony.
United States Attorney Damian Williams emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, ‘Today’s sentence demonstrates that those who use illegal weapons to inflict violence in our community will be held accountable for their crimes.’
Evidence presented in court revealed that the shooting was a gang-related incident. One of the victims had posted online video footage insulting rival gang members just hours before the attack, prompting the defendants’ revenge.
Judge Sidney H. Stein described the crime as ‘horrific,’ noting that the shooting of innocent bystanders was simply due to name-calling. Both Christopher and Wade have previous convictions for serious crimes, including attempted robbery and assault.
U.S. Attorney Williams praised the New York City Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration for their work in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ryan B. Finkel and Mollie E. Bracewell are responsible for the prosecution of the case.
