Carlos Rivas, Possession of Child Pornography Involving Minors Under 12, New York 2024

BRONX, NY – Carlos Rivas, 22, of the Bronx, is facing federal charges after authorities uncovered a disturbing cache of child pornography linked to his accounts. The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, announced Rivas’s arrest yesterday, stemming from a complaint detailing the possession of hundreds of sexually explicit images and videos depicting pre-pubescent children.

The feds allege Rivas possessed this horrific material while employed at a Bronx school (“School-1”) during the summer of 2024. According to the complaint, between July 14th and August 15th, Rivas stored the images and videos on an electronic file storage service. Disturbingly, some of the content was reportedly uploaded using an internet connection associated with School-1, raising serious questions about potential access during work hours.

“As alleged, Carlos Rivas possessed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography while working at a Bronx school,” stated U.S. Attorney Clayton. “Child pornography has no place anywhere in our society, particularly anywhere connected to a school. Our devoted prosecutors and partners will unrelentingly fight this scourge.” The investigation, spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations, highlights the growing threat of online exploitation and the dedication of law enforcement to track down perpetrators.

Rivas was presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger following his arrest. He is currently charged with one count of possession of child pornography, specifically images and videos involving minors who had not attained 12 years of age. If convicted, Rivas faces a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars – a penalty prescribed by Congress and subject to judicial discretion.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita Maxwell is leading the prosecution for the Office’s General Crimes Unit. Clayton’s office was quick to emphasize that the charges are merely allegations at this stage, and Rivas is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops, exposing the dark underbelly of online exploitation and holding offenders accountable.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of child sexual abuse material and the urgent need for vigilance. Anyone with information regarding child exploitation is urged to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children or their local law enforcement agency. The details contained in the complaint remain allegations, but the potential for harm is undeniable.
