Brooklyn Center Gang Banger Caught with 9mm Pistol as Felon

A federal jury found Dante Jospeh Tyus, 30, of Brooklyn Center, guilty of possessing a firearm as a felon after he was caught with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun hidden inside his vehicle.

The conviction comes after a four-day trial in U.S. District Court before Judge Susan Richard Nelson. Tyus, a member of the Minneapolis Bloods street gang, was arrested on September 28, 2019, for driving erratically and showing obvious signs of intoxication.

According to the evidence presented at trial, Tyus made a series of recorded calls from the Hennepin County Jail expressing concern to his girlfriend and enlisting her assistance in recovering the firearm that was hidden inside his vehicle.

Law enforcement obtained a warrant to search the vehicle and recovered the 9mm handgun hidden inside a door panel. Tyus has prior felony convictions in Hennepin County, making him prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carla J. Baumel and Allen A. Slaughter tried the case, which is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Minneapolis Police Department.

A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date for Tyus, who faces stiff penalties for his conviction.

The conviction of Tyus serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to crack down on gang violence and firearms possession in the state of Minnesota.

As a member of the Minneapolis Bloods street gang, Tyus’s actions put himself and others at risk, and the conviction is a step towards making the community safer.
