ALBUQUERQUE – The grim reaper of the drug trade met its match as Edward Lewis, 49, from Brooklyn, N.Y., was handed a 46-month prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release for his heroin trafficking conviction in New Mexico.
The sentence came after Lewis was busted on June 23, 2016, at the Greyhound Bus Station in Albuquerque. The DEA’s sharp eyes caught him with over half a kilogram of pure death: 523.50 grams of heroin stashed away in his trousers. The intent was clear – to transport this deadly bundle from Los Angeles to New York.
Lewis wasn’t playing hide and seek for long; he was indicted on July 12, 2016, for possession of heroin with intent to distribute. His fate was sealed when he pled guilty on Jan. 30, 2017, acknowledging his crime and the lives he threatened to destroy.
This isn’t just a story of one man’s fall; it’s a victory in the ongoing battle against the opioid epidemic that has New Mexico reeling. The DEA’s Albuquerque office led the charge, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David P. Cowen prosecuting on behalf of the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative.
The HOPE Initiative was formed in 2015 to combat the national opioid crisis. It’s a multi-faceted approach involving prevention, treatment, law enforcement, reentry programs, and strategic planning. Targeting major drug organizations is a cornerstone of their strategy, and Lewis’s downfall is a testament to their efforts.
