Burlington, Vermont – A 22-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, has been charged with evidence tampering in a major drug investigation. Damien DeJesus, 22, is accused of destroying and attempting to destroy evidence that could have been used against him in a criminal prosecution.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, on August 14, 2025, law enforcement executed a federal search warrant at a residence in Vergennes, Vermont. They discovered cocaine and three loaded firearms during the raid. DeJesus was detained and brought to the Vergennes Police Department.
While being held, DeJesus requested access to a bathroom. He was heard crumpling plastic bags, which he later flushed down the toilet. Investigators discovered traces of cocaine on the toilet tank after his use.
DeJesus appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle on August 20, 2025, who ordered his release under certain conditions. If convicted, DeJesus faces up to twenty years in prison. The United States Attorney’s Office emphasizes that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities from violent crime. Assistant United States Attorneys Michelle Arra and Zachary Stendig are handling the prosecution with support from various law enforcement agencies.
DeJesus is represented by Jason Sawyer, Esq., who will be defending him in court. The severity of the sentence will depend on the District Court’s decision and the advisory guidelines provided by the United States Sentencing Commission.”
