James Christopher Davis, 47, of Brooklyn, New York, is headed to federal prison after copping to a cocaine charge in Roanoke, Virginia. The 27-month sentence handed down today in U.S. District Court marks the end of a case rooted in a chaotic January 2016 raid that exposed a clear attempt to hide evidence.
Davis previously pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The charge stems from a search warrant executed at a Roanoke apartment on January 27, 2016. When law enforcement breached the door, Davis was the first person seen—and his reaction raised immediate red flags.
Instead of complying, Davis bolted for the bathroom and slammed the door shut. Officers quickly followed, forced entry, and found him in possession of a large black plastic bag. Inside: a white powdery substance that later tested positive for cocaine. The seizure was swift, the evidence undeniable.
Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Bassford presented the case, laying out the timeline and forensic results that sealed Davis’s fate. No co-conspirators were named in the indictment, but investigators stressed the larger pattern of out-of-state traffickers using central Virginia as a distribution hub.
“The distribution of illegal drugs continues to be a problem in our communities that must be addressed through a combined approach of enforcement, treatment and prevention,” said United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. today, underscoring the federal office’s ongoing war on narcotics.
Davis will serve 27 months in federal prison, followed by supervised release. The prosecution, led by Bassford, emphasized that attempts to flee or destroy evidence will only compound consequences. For Davis, the cost of one panicked moment in a Roanoke bathroom will be nearly two and a half years behind bars.
