A brutal case of brotherly love turned deadly for two Alabama men, who conspired to murder Jason Starr’s ex-wife and have been ordered to pay a hefty price for their crime.
On April 29, 2024, a federal judge in Montgomery, Alabama, ruled that Jason Starr, 45, from Coffee Springs, Alabama, and his brother, Darin Starr, 42, from Lakehills, Texas, must fork over $1,069,242.03 in restitution after being found guilty of a murder-for-hire plot.
The tragic events unfolded in 2017, when Jason Starr, upset about the amount of money his ex-wife had been awarded after their divorce, recruited his brother to take out the hit. Darin Starr, a resident of Texas, shot and killed his brother’s ex-wife in her driveway as she was leaving for work on the Monday following Thanksgiving in 2017.
A federal jury delivered the guilty verdict on September 20, 2023, convicting both Jason and Darin Starr of their murder-for-hire scheme. As a result, both brothers received a life sentence, with no possibility of parole in the federal system. In addition to the prison sentence, the judge also ordered Jason Starr to pay a fine of $25,000.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Assistant United States Attorneys B. Chelsea Phillips and Joshua J. Wendell prosecuted the case, while Assistant United States Attorney Audrey L. Willis handled the restitution portion.
With their freedom and a significant portion of their assets now stripped away, the Starr brothers will be forced to confront the harsh consequences of their actions. The $1.1 million restitution bill serves as a stark reminder that justice can be costly, and the price of violence will always be paid in full.
