A 22-year-old man has been locked up after conspiring to steal firearms from a Pittsburgh gun store, according to prosecutors. Jamir Atkins, formerly of Buente Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, has been sentenced to 12 months and 1 day of imprisonment with 3 years’ supervised release on a charge of conspiracy.
United States District Judge W. Scott Hardy handed down the sentence on Atkins, who pleaded guilty to the charge. In connection with the guilty plea of brothers Jerwahn Atkins, Jamir Atkins, and Jerquay Atkins, the court was advised that on May 31, 2020, the Atkins brothers conspired to steal firearms from federal firearm licensee, Allegheny Arms and Gun Works.
The plot went awry when the brothers attempted to pry open the door with a crowbar, triggering a burglary alarm. However, the alarm caused them to flee the scene. Jerquay and Jerwahn left the scene in the same vehicle, while Jamir departed in a separate vehicle and failed to arrive at the next crime scene.
The brothers then drove to the National Armory in Moon Township, another federal firearm licensee. The crowbar was used once again, triggering the alarm and causing the brothers to flee once more. Assistant United States Attorney Brendan J. McKenna prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
The investigation was led by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case highlights the importance of law enforcement working together to combat firearms theft and related crimes. As the city continues to grapple with gun violence, the sentencing of Jamir Atkins serves as a reminder of the consequences of such crimes.
Atkins is the third brother to be sentenced in connection with the case. Jerquay and Jerwahn Atkins are still facing charges. The sentencing of Jamir Atkins brings an end to a saga that has left a lasting impact on the community. As the city moves forward, it is clear that those involved in such crimes will face justice.
