Memphis, TN – A convicted felon has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for distribution of methamphetamine and using a firearm during a drug trafficking offense.
Bruce Matthews, 28, was sentenced to 137 months in federal prison for his crimes, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph C. Murphy Jr.
Matthews was a convicted felon, having previously been convicted of aggravated assault and criminal attempt rape of a child. As a result of his prior felony convictions, he is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The investigation into Matthews’ crimes began in November 2019, when undercover agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) began a criminal investigation of Matthews during several controlled purchases of firearms and methamphetamine transactions.
Matthews pled guilty to the charges on February 5, 2021, and was subsequently sentenced by U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Parker on May 20, 2021.
Matthews is prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition due to his prior felony convictions. His crimes demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and put the community at risk.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Wendy K. Cornejo.
In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph C. Murphy Jr. said, ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to hold individuals accountable for their crimes and make our communities safer.’
