Bryan Wade Smith, 29, is staring down federal time after being indicted for smuggling and possessing buprenorphine inside the Federal Correctional Institution in Loretto, Pennsylvania. The charge, handed down by a federal grand jury in Johnstown, marks the latest crackdown on drug trafficking behind prison walls.
According to court documents, Smith was caught with a quantity of buprenorphine — a controlled substance used to treat opioid addiction — on October 3, 2018. Despite the medical use of the drug, possession inside a federal prison without authorization is a serious federal offense.
The indictment, announced by United States Attorney Scott W. Brady, carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. If convicted, Smith’s actual sentence will be determined under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, weighing the severity of the offense and his prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon is leading the prosecution, pushing forward a case built on evidence gathered by federal investigators embedded within the prison system. The charges underscore the ongoing battle to stem the flow of contraband in federal facilities.
The investigation was conducted by the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Investigative Staff at FCI-Loretto. Their joint efforts have repeatedly exposed vulnerabilities exploited by inmates seeking to traffic drugs.
An indictment is not a conviction. Bryan Wade Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The case now moves toward arraignment, where he will enter a formal plea to the charge of possession of a prohibited object in prison.
