In a shocking turn of events, the Buckeye Bandit, Ikechi W. Emeaghara, 27, of Columbus, has pleaded guilty to eight counts of armed bank robbery. The string of robberies, which took place between 2013 and 2016, left authorities baffled and the public on edge.
According to court documents, Emeaghara brandished a dangerous weapon and demanded cash from bank tellers’ drawers on multiple occasions. The dates of the robberies include October 31, 2013, at the Wesbanco Bank on South Stygler Road in Gahanna, November 30, 2013, at the Cooper State Bank on West 5th Avenue in Columbus, December 6, 2013, at the Wesbanco Bank on South Stygler Road in Gahanna, and several others.
Emeaghara was indicted by the federal grand jury in initial and superseding indictments in November and December 2016. Armed bank robbery is a crime punishable by up to 25 years in prison. Armed robbery including forcing one or more persons to accompany the defendant without their consent is punishable by a mandatory minimum 10-year prison term, with a possible 25-year maximum.
U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman commended the cooperative investigation by law enforcement, which included the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and local police departments. Glassman praised Deputy Criminal Chief Gary L. Spartis and Assistant U.S. Attorney Salvador A. Dominguez for their work on the case.
The guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement and a relief to the community. Emeaghara’s actions put the lives of bank employees and customers at risk, and his conviction serves as a reminder of the consequences of such crimes.
The outcome of Emeaghara’s case will be determined at a later date. In the meantime, the community can rest a little easier knowing that the Buckeye Bandit will face justice.
