PIERRE, SD – Alexander Oka, 27, of Bullhead, South Dakota, has a lot to answer for. A federal jury delivered a guilty verdict on February 23, 2018, convicting him of both Domestic Assault by an Habitual Offender and Tampering with a Victim. The case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeremy R. Jehangiri, paints a disturbing picture of repeated violence and a blatant attempt to obstruct justice.
The evidence presented at trial revealed a brutal assault on July 5, 2017. Oka unlawfully attacked the victim, smacking her head and then kicking her in the back while she was distracted feeding their baby. The kick inflicted significant pain, according to court documents. This wasn’t a first-time offense; Oka already had at least two prior convictions for offenses that, if under federal jurisdiction, would have been considered assault against a spouse or intimate partner – establishing him as a habitual offender.
But the violence wasn’t the end of it. After his arrest, Oka attempted to control the situation from behind bars. He penned a letter to the victim from jail, explicitly instructing her not to cooperate with the investigation and to skip her court appearances. This brazen attempt to intimidate a witness and derail the legal process earned him the additional charge of Tampering with a Victim.
Oka’s history of domestic abuse extends beyond this latest incident, with prior convictions secured in both tribal and federal courts. This pattern of violence, coupled with his attempt to silence the victim, clearly demonstrates a disregard for the law and the safety of those around him. The Bureau of Indian Affairs-Office of Justice Services led the investigation, building a solid case against the defendant.
Now, Oka faces a potentially lengthy prison sentence. The maximum penalty for Domestic Assault by an Habitual Offender is five years. Tampering with a Victim carries a maximum sentence of twenty years. Each conviction also carries a potential fine of up to $250,000, three years of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered by the court.
Oka remains detained pending sentencing, with a tentative sentencing date set for May 14, 2018, in Pierre. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the commitment of federal authorities to hold repeat offenders accountable for their actions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing.
