Aberdeen, SD – In a shocking turn of events, 27-year-old Bullhead woman Kaitlyn Shantell Left Hand has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon within the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation.
According to court records, the sentencing took place on June 23, 2025, after Left Hand pleaded guilty to the charges on February 26, 2025. The incident occurred on July 2, 2024, when Left Hand intervened in a brawl between two women in Bullhead, South Dakota.
Despite good intentions, Left Hand’s attempt to break up the fight ended in disaster when she drew a small knife and stabbed one woman in the head and abdomen and another in the back. Miraculously, the injured women only required stitches and were not seriously harmed.
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that mandates certain violent crimes committed in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court instead of state court. The Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem handled the prosecution.
Left Hand was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where she will serve her two-year sentence. Following her release, she will be subject to three years of supervised release and will have to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The harsh sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of violent crimes committed in Indian country. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has made it clear that such crimes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
