Gerald A. DeLemus, Conspiracy to Commit an Offense, Nevada 2014

Cliven Bundy’s armed standoff in Bunkerville, Nevada, has led to the sentencing of one of his alleged accomplices. Gerald A. DeLemus, 62, from Rochester, New Hampshire, was handed an 87-month prison sentence today for conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States and aiding extortion during the 2014 event.

DeLemus admitted to joining forces with Bundy and others during a tense telephone conversation. He traveled to Nevada armed, intending to aid Bundy in his confrontation with federal law enforcement over trespassing cattle on public lands.

United States District Chief Judge Gloria M. Navarro also sentenced DeLemus to three years of supervised release following his prison term. The plea agreement revealed that DeLemus actively participated in the intimidation of federal officers, including a firearm-assisted assault during impoundment operations.

Bundy’s standoff was marked by violence and defiance, with at least one member of the conspiracy brandishing firearms to intimidate officers. DeLemus further confessed to providing personal security to Bundy and conspirators, leading patrols, and mobilizing others to show support for Bundy. His actions were aimed at intimidating public officials and influencing their official duties.

The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the FBI and Bureau of Land Management, while the prosecution was led by Acting U.S. Attorney Steven W. Myhre and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nicholas D. Dickinson and Nadia J. Ahmed, along with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin M. Creegan.

DeLemus’s sentence sends a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in violent confrontation with federal authorities.
