Burgess Charged with Hate Crime Assault
A Pittsburgh man has been charged with hate crime assault after allegedly violently attacking a victim due to their perceived race, color, and national origin.
54-year-old Jeffrey Allen Burgess was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on a charge of violating the Hate Crimes Prevention Act. The alleged assault occurred on November 22, 2016.
According to the indictment, Burgess willfully caused bodily injury to A.M. because of their perceived race, color, and national origin. The Matthew Shepard and James Bryd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act prohibits such actions.
Conviction on this charge could result in a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The FBI and Bethel Park Police Department are investigating the case.
