Dope. Destruction. Decades behind bars. Gregory Louis Baxter, Jr., 34, of Burlington, Iowa, was sentenced to 242 months in federal prison on February 12, 2018, for possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine — a conviction that slammed the door shut on a pattern of drug dealing and attempted evasion.
U.S. District Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger handed down the sentence after Baxter pleaded guilty to the federal charge in the Southern District of Iowa. In addition to the prison term, Baxter must serve ten years of supervised release and pay $100 to the Crime Victims’ Fund — a small price compared to the weight of his actions.
According to the plea agreement, on April 4, 2017, Baxter was caught with 312 grams of actual “ice” methamphetamine — a high-purity form of the drug that floods the streets and fuels addiction. He admitted not only to possessing the drugs but distributing ounces of meth on that same day, feeding a cycle of dependency and crime across southeastern Iowa.
Baxter didn’t go quietly. He admitted to trying to flee from law enforcement in a vehicle and attempting to destroy evidence — a desperate move that only piled on charges and confirmed prosecutors’ claims of deliberate criminal conduct. The attempt to escape justice failed fast, with multiple agencies closing in within hours.
The case was a joint operation involving the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Narcotics Enforcement; Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force; Johnson County Drug Task Force; Burlington and West Burlington Police Departments; Iowa State Patrol; and Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office — a testament to the sprawling effort needed to dismantle even one dealer’s operation.
Baxter’s 2014 state conviction for conspiracy to deliver marijuana triggered an enhanced mandatory minimum sentence, ratcheting up the penalty under federal law. U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum emphasized the message: repeat offenders dealing poison on our streets will face maximum consequences. For Baxter, the high life just became a long sentence.
