Business Owner Sentenced for Mail Fraud
A California woman has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for her conviction on mail fraud charges related to a 2006 fire at her Mountain View business.
Fauzia Lodhi, 53, pleaded guilty to committing mail fraud on May 1, 2013, for submitting fraudulent business income interruption and personal property claims to State Farm Insurance. Lodhi owned the Postal Express, located at 801 West El Camino Real, Mountain View, Calif.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Lodhi had provided inflated inventory and revenue statements to a State Farm insurance agent before the fire, inducing the company to insure her business for more than its actual value. She then submitted insurance claims based on the falsely inflated statements.
Lodhi also admitted to intentionally misrepresenting the amount of business interruption and loss of business personal property insurance payments she was entitled to under her State Farm policy. She used the fraudulently-obtained payments to satisfy her outstanding debts.
The sentence was handed down by the Honorable Lucy H. Koh, United States District Court Judge. In addition to the 16-month prison sentence, Lodhi was also sentenced to a three-year period of supervised release and ordered to pay restitution of $54,896 to State Farm Insurance.
Lodhi is required to self-surrender on July 30, 2014. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Parrella, with the assistance of Elise Etter. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Mountain View Police Department, and the Mountain View Fire Department.
Fauzia Lodhi’s conviction and sentencing serve as a reminder of the consequences of white-collar crime. Her actions not only harmed her business and the insurance company but also undermined the trust of the community.
