PHILADELPHIA – In a stunning revelation, Mohammad N. Ali, 40, of Feasterville, Pennsylvania, has admitted to bribing Philadelphia District Attorney Rufus Seth Williams and committing federal tax evasion, according to Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick.
Ali, charged with one count of using facilities in interstate and foreign commerce to promote bribery and one count of federal tax evasion, provided a lavish array of gifts to Williams between July 2010 and May 2015. Among the items were a trip to Punta Cana worth $6,381, a custom sofa valued at $3,212, and a Burberry watch.
In exchange for these bribes, Williams agreed to perform official acts that violated his legal duties, including helping Ali avoid airport screenings. On one occasion, Williams requested the police official present to assist Ali in bypassing secondary screening at the airport after giving him a $7,000 check.
Ali also sought Williams’ help in navigating criminal charges against an associate. In addition, he admitted making and subscribing a false federal income tax return, which failed to report taxable income of approximately $246,504.
The bribery count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, while the tax evasion charge could result in three years behind bars. Sentencing is scheduled for August 24, 2017.
Williams faces related charges and is considered innocent until proven guilty. The investigation was conducted by the FBI, IRS-Criminal Investigation, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
