It’s a grim day in the halls of justice as Cajan Welding &Rentals, Ltd., an Opelousas-based company, stands guilty for its role in a fraudulent procurement scheme. The United States Attorney Peter G. Strasser and Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim from the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice have announced that Cajan Welding & Rentals, Ltd. has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and violate the Procurement Integrity Act.
According to the admissions made during its plea, the company conspired with unnamed co-conspirators to corrupt and impair the government procurement process. This was achieved by obtaining non-public pricing and cost information, which allowed them to secure subcontract awards and payments from the U.S. Department of Energy for their involvement in the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
The charges against Cajan Welding & Rentals carry a severe penalty: a statutory maximum fine of $500,000.00, a probation term of up to five years, and a special assessment of $400.00 for companies. This comes as a stark reminder that fraud against the government and its taxpayers is not taken lightly.
“Fraud, regardless of its scope, is a serious crime,” said U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser of the Eastern District of Louisiana. “Especially egregious is fraud committed against the hardworking taxpayer.” The guilty plea from Cajan Welding & Rentals sends a clear message that the office will investigate and prosecute corruption with vigor.
Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim echoed these sentiments, stating, “Today’s guilty plea demonstrates that corruption of vital federal programs like the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will not be tolerated. The Antitrust Division remains vigilant in protecting taxpayer funds through competition.”
The Department of Energy Inspector General, Teri L. Donaldson, also commented on the case, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring integrity among contractors and subcontractors. “We take allegations of procurement integrity violations very seriously,” she said.
