Cedar Rapids, Iowa – A man who broke free from a residential reentry center before, is now facing another stint in federal prison after a guilty plea to escape charges. Caleb Lee Olson, 49, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison following a May 15, 2024, guilty plea to one count of escape from Federal Bureau of Prisons custody on November 27, 2023.
According to court documents, Olson left the Gerald R. Hinzman Center in Cedar Rapids without permission and did not return, prompting an investigation by the United States Marshals Service and the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force. Olson was eventually found in Marion, Iowa, and arrested on December 5, 2023.
Olson’s prison term will be followed by a three-year term of supervised release. It’s worth noting that there is no parole in the federal system. As of now, Olson is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert. The investigation involved the United States Marshals Service and the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force.
Olson’s sentencing comes after a year of being on the run. The case number is 24-CR-00003, and court file information can be accessed at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl.
