Mason City Man Sentenced for Illegal Firearm Possession

Lance Kohler, a 46-year-old man from Mason City, Iowa, has been sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

According to a recent conviction, Kohler pleaded guilty to the charge on May 6, 2024, and was sentenced on September 13, 2024, by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City.

The case began on December 5, 2023, when law enforcement responded to a rollover accident in Cerro Gordo County. Kohler, the sole occupant of the vehicle, had a firearm in plain view, as well as a few hypodermic needles. Officers seized the firearm and approximately 13 grams of methamphetamine from the vehicle.

Kohler initially denied owning the firearm, but later admitted to possessing both the methamphetamine and the firearm during a subsequent interview with another officer. Lab results confirmed that Kohler had both methamphetamine and cocaine in his system at the time of the accident.

Assistant United States Attorney Ron Timmons prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.

Kohler is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. He must also serve a 2-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
