A federal jury has delivered a guilty verdict in the case of Junior Gafatasi Tulali, a 48-year-old California drug dealer accused of providing the fentanyl that killed a Fairbanks man in 2020.
The conviction comes after a lengthy investigation and trial that revealed Tulali’s role in shipping counterfeit Oxycodone M30 pills laced with fentanyl from California to Fairbanks. The pills were retrieved by a local dealer who distributed them to several others in the area.
On October 26, 2020, the victim purchased two of the counterfeit pills from the shipment and was found dead in his home on October 28, 2020. Medical examiners determined the cause of death was acute toxic effects of fentanyl.
But that was not the only fatal consequence of Tulali’s actions. The same shipment was linked to two additional non-fatal fentanyl overdoses in Fairbanks. Two local dealers who sold the fentanyl pills to the victim were convicted in 2022 for their role in the offense.
U.S. Attorney S. Lane Tucker vowed to prioritize the prosecution of fentanyl traffickers, saying, “Fentanyl is poison and has killed too many Alaskans. The successful conviction of Mr. Tulali highlights my office’s vow to keep fentanyl out of our communities and prosecute those who cause irreparable damage by trafficking it to our state from Outside.”
The DEA, Fairbanks Police Department, FBI Anchorage Field Office, and Alaska State Troopers all played a role in the investigation and prosecution of Tulali. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carly Vosacek and Alana Weber are prosecuting the case.
Junior Gafatasi Tulali’s conviction is a significant blow to the fentanyl trafficking industry in Alaska. His actions demonstrate the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
