California Man Pleads Guilty To Hacking High-Profile Websites

In a shocking turn of events, Billy Ribeiro Anderson, a 41-year-old man from Torrance, California, has pleaded guilty to hacking two high-profile websites: the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point and the Office of the New York City Comptroller.

Anderson, also known by his online pseudonyms “Anderson Albuquerque” and “AlfabetoVirtual,” faces up to 20 years in prison for his crimes, which included over 11,000 website defacements worldwide.

The FBI launched an investigation into Anderson’s activities, which revealed that he had been hacking government and business websites since 2015. His modus operandi was to exploit security vulnerabilities in website plugins, allowing him to gain unauthorized access and deface the websites.

One of the most notable hacks occurred in 2015, when Anderson defaced a website owned by the NYC Comptroller, replacing the content with pro-Palestinian messages. Another notable hack took place in 2016, when Anderson defaced a website for the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.

Anderson’s crimes were uncovered after the FBI’s Computer Crime Investigative Unit of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command worked tirelessly to track him down. U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman praised the FBI’s outstanding investigative work, saying that Anderson’s crimes demonstrate the severity of cyber intrusions into government websites.

Anderson is scheduled to be sentenced on February 13, 2019, and could face up to 20 years in prison. His crimes serve as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity and the need for vigilance in protecting against cyber threats.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said, “Billy Anderson hacked the websites of the New York City Comptroller and West Point, one of the most prestigious military academies in the world. He has now pled guilty to those crimes and faces time in federal prison. This case demonstrates that those who seek to commit cyber intrusions of government websites will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
