A brazen methamphetamine trafficking ring was brought to its knees when a California man was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison for his role in the conspiracy.
Michael George Sequeira, 37, of San Jose, California, was convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and will serve five years of supervised release following his prison term. He was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Sequeira was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 17, 2019, and later pleaded guilty on March 8, 2021. The conviction stems from incidents beginning at an unknown date and continuing until December 2019, when Sequeira knowingly and intentionally combined, conspired, confederated, agreed with others to distribute a mixture or substance containing 500 grams or more of methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance.
According to court documents, Sequeira provided over 500 grams of methamphetamine to his co-conspirators in South Dakota, who then redistributed it to drug customers in the state.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department, and the Sioux Falls Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer D. Mammenga prosecuted the case.
Sequeira was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing hearing on August 24, 2021, before U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Dakota praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
The prosecution of Sequeira serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against methamphetamine trafficking in our communities. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
