Billings, MT – In a stunning turn of events, Tracy Routh Lautenslager, a 53-year-old woman from California, faced the music today as she pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges for smuggling her husband into the United States. The U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced that Lautenslager admitted her role in the illicit scheme.
The defendant is looking at a decade behind bars, a quarter of a million dollars in fines, and three years of supervised release, according to federal sentencing guidelines. Judge Dana L. Christensen will hand down the final verdict on January 6, 2026, following a thorough review of the case.
Lautenslager’s husband, an illegal alien from Great Britain with no legal status in the U.S., was caught by U.S. Border Patrol near Roosville, Montana. The man had crossed the international boundary line from Canada into the United States, but he was later apprehended and returned to the Canadian side of the border by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
During a subsequent investigation, Lautenslager was found to have planned the illegal crossing with her husband, who would be dropped off on the Canadian side before being picked up in the U.S. Her cellphone contained incriminating text messages detailing their plan to evade immigration checkpoints.
The charges against Lautenslager are part of Operation Take Back America, a sweeping initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling transnational criminal organizations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zeno Baucus prosecuted the case, with the U.S. Border Patrol leading the investigation.
This grim tale underscores the ongoing battle against illegal immigration and serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals are willing to go to for illegal gain.
