San Antonio Woman Faces Up to Four Years in Prison for Hydrocodone Fraud

WACO – In a shocking case of prescription abuse, 41-year-old Calista Angelique Amani of San Antonio is facing up to four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to fraudulently obtaining Hydrocodone. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr. in a statement released today.

Amani appeared before United States District Judge Walter Smith, Sr. and pleaded guilty to one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraudulent means. By pleading guilty, Amani admitted that from March 2013 through April 2014, she saw 36 different medical practitioners in various cities and obtained 40 overlapping prescriptions for Hydrocodone.

Those prescriptions were filled at 15 different pharmacies located in Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove, as well as other pharmacies located in various counties, including Bexar and Williamson. Amani also admitted that she obtained these prescriptions through fraud, misrepresentation, and deception by providing different two different names and three different dates of birth.

Amani has remained in federal custody since her arrest on February 23, 2015. Sentencing is scheduled for June 17, 2015, before Judge Smith in Waco.

This case resulted from an investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mary Kucera.
