A brazen bank robber has been charged with robbing two banks in his hometown of New Castle, Pennsylvania.
Calvin Smith, 43, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of bank robbery, announced United States Attorney David J. Hickton.
The two-count indictment names Calvin Smith as the sole defendant.
According to the indictment, on November 5, 2014, Smith robbed the Huntington Bank located at 101 E. Washington St., in New Castle and on December 2, 2014, Smith robbed the First Commonwealth Bank located at 27 E. Washington St., also in New Castle. The banks are both insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
For each count, the law provides for a maximum total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Cindy K. Chung is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Castle City Police Department conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
