Former Camden County Public Service Authority Executive Director William Brunson is facing a 32-month federal prison term for his role in a massive tax evasion scheme. The 53-year-old Kingsland, Ga., resident was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood after pleading guilty to one count of Tax Evasion, according to Bobby L. Christine, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Brunson is also ordered to pay $677,768.40 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release following his prison term.
“Such blatant theft as the scheme perpetrated by William Brunson strains the already fragile trust in public service,” Christine said. “This investigation and the ensuing prison sentence should be a stark reminder to other public servants that they are accountable to the taxpayers they serve.”
Court documents reveal that Brunson was responsible for paying over $677,000 in employment taxes on behalf of the Public Service Authority (PSA) between 2014 and 2016. During this period, he failed to remit these funds to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), while simultaneously neglecting to file his own personal tax returns. In addition, Brunson misused a Camden County PSA credit card and other funds for personal expenses, including the acquisition of antique cars and parts.
Brunson was terminated from the PSA in May 2018 following an audit of the authority’s finances and an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). “It is our hope that holding Brunson accountable for his greed will help regain some of the public’s trust that was eroded by his actions,” said Chris Hacker, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta.
IRS Criminal Investigations Special Agent in Charge James E. Dorsey emphasized the importance of ethical standards among government officials. “Government officials should be held to a higher ethical standard and it was obvious that Brunson chose greed over doing the honest thing,” he said. The GBI Director Vic Reynolds echoed this sentiment, stating that trust and accountability are paramount when dealing with public funds.
The investigation into Brunson’s actions was conducted by the IRS, FBI, and GBI, and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, underscoring the collaborative effort to bring justice to taxpayers.”
