Camden Man Jailed for 80 Months Over Gun Charge
A 27-year-old Camden man has been sentenced to 80 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a previously convicted felon. Anthony Thomas was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb in Camden federal court.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Thomas was arrested on August 13, 2017, after Camden County Police observed him displaying a handgun to another man. The firearm was found to be a loaded, Glock Model 17, 9mm handgun.
Thomas had previously pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon. This charge stems from his display of the firearm in a residential area where two young children were playing nearby.
The children had been entering and exiting a vehicle where Thomas had retrieved the handgun from underneath the front passenger seat. The handgun was displayed to a second man before police intervened and apprehended Thomas after he fled on foot.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito praised the work of special agents from the ATF Camden Field Office and the Camden County Police Department in bringing this case to a close.
In addition to the prison term, Judge Bumb sentenced Thomas to three years of supervised release. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gabriel J. Vidoni.
Defense counsel for Thomas was Thomas J. Young Esq., an Assistant Federal Public Defender based in Camden.
