HOUSTON – In a grim victory against transnational organized crime, 35-year-old Canadian national Jack Kasjaniuk was sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison for his pivotal role in smuggling cocaine from South America to Canada. The sentence, announced by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei, sends a powerful message about the stiff penalties for those involved in international drug trafficking.
Kasjaniuk, who illegally resided in the Heights area of Houston, pleaded guilty on May 27. U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt handed down a sentence of 135 months, ensuring Kasjaniuk will spend nearly a decade behind bars. The court heard evidence detailing Kasjaniuk’s operation of a distribution hub for hundreds of kilograms of cocaine, destined for Canada after being repackaged in the United States.
Not a U.S. citizen, Kasjaniuk is facing removal proceedings following his sentence. His criminal endeavors were specifically aimed at receiving shipments of cocaine for the drug trafficking organization based in Canada. Operating the distribution point in Houston’s Heights neighborhood for approximately two years, he was responsible for handling at least 620 kilograms of cocaine over just three months.
Currently in custody, Kasjaniuk will be transferred to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility as soon as arrangements are finalized. The investigation into his activities was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with significant assistance from local law enforcement agencies including the Houston Police Department and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The Alberta, Canada, Law Enforcement Response Team also played a crucial role in bringing Kasjaniuk to justice.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stuart Tallichet prosecuted the case, ensuring that justice was served for the communities affected by Kasjaniuk’s illegal activities. This sentence is a testament to the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies worldwide to combat the devastating effects of drug trafficking on global society.
