Canadian Man Fakes Citizenship
A 47-year-old man from Toronto, Canada, has pleaded guilty to making false statements to a Customs and Border Protection Officer.
Abdi Ali Kulmie attempted to enter the United States from Canada at the Peace Bridge on October 27, 2012. When questioned by Customs and Border Protection officers, Kulmie claimed to be a Somalian citizen, not a Canadian citizen.
However, the defendant became a naturalized Canadian citizen in the early 1990s and is actually an Ethiopian.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony M. Bruce stated that the plea is the culmination of an investigation by Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of James T. Engleman, Director of Field Operations.
Kulmie faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both. The charge carries a significant penalty, and the defendant’s actions have raised questions about the integrity of the U.S. border.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency when dealing with government officials. Kulmie’s false statements have put him at risk of a lengthy prison sentence and a significant fine.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the guilty plea, emphasizing the severity of the charge and the potential consequences for the defendant.
