Ajaypal Dhillon, 20, of Ontario, Canada, is heading to prison for smuggling. Grimy Times has learned Dhillon was sentenced to serve 30 months in prison by U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr. after being convicted of smuggling merchandise into the United States.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Adler, who handled the case, Dhillon’s troubles began on July 27, 2023, when he drove a commercial tractor-trailer to the Peace Bridge Port of Entry seeking entry into the United States from Canada. Dhillon claimed he was transporting frozen waffles destined for a Publix grocery store warehouse in Georgia.
However, Publix representatives stated that the shipment was not expected, and the purported shipper of the product confirmed that the shipment was fraudulent. Dhillon was referred to secondary inspection, where Customs and Border Protection officers made a shocking discovery: boxes containing over 2000 pounds of marijuana and over 50 kilograms of ketamine.
Further investigation revealed that this was not Dhillon’s first rodeo. In fact, he had made five prior fraudulent trips, four of which claimed to transport candy and the fifth, another waffle shipment, after being denied by the customs broker.
The sentencing is the result of an investigation by Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Director of Field Operations Rose Brophy, and Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Scarpino.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross said, “Dhillon’s brazen attempt to smuggle large quantities of narcotics and a controlled substance into our country will not be tolerated. His sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in such activities will be held accountable.”
Dhillon’s 30-month sentence is a significant blow to his plans, and a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working to keep our communities safe.
