Canadian Smuggling Ring Crumbles
BUFFALO, N.Y.—A brazen attempt to smuggle aliens into the United States has been shattered, thanks to the tireless efforts of Customs and Border Protection officers.
Tonin Ndoja, a 50-year-old Canadian citizen, was sentenced to time served for making a false statement to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer involving his attempt to smuggle aliens into the United States, U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced today.
Ndoja, a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card holder and member of the trusted traveler program, was driving a tractor trailer carrying rolled steel when he was stopped for a secondary inspection at the Peace Bridge on November 12, 2014.
During the inspection, officers discovered Ndoja and two Albanian citizens, Bardok and Kleda Tusha, hidden inside the cab of the tractor trailer under a blanket.
The two Albanians, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of illegal entry, were also sentenced to time served.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen, Jr., who handled the case, praised the efforts of Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Acting Director of Field Operations Rose Hilmey.
The sentence brings an end to a lengthy investigation, one that highlights the dangers of human trafficking and the vigilance of our border agents.
