Valentine Cancino, Production of Child Sexual Abuse Material, Texas 2023

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Valentine Cancino, 35, of Corpus Christi, will spend the next 27 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, reflects the horrific nature of Cancino’s crimes and the ongoing abuse discovered during a raid on his home. The Grimy Times has learned the defendant was actively sexually abusing a minor relative as authorities were executing a search warrant.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the sentencing, stating, “There is hardly a sentence available that can fully account for the depravity of the defendant’s conduct, but the 27-year sentence he received here will have to do.” The investigation began with multiple cyber-tips reporting the upload of CSAM, leading law enforcement to identify Cancino as the source.

On January 30, 2024, authorities served a search warrant at Cancino’s residence. They seized two electronic devices, including a Samsung Galaxy cell phone. A forensic examination of the phone revealed a video recording of Cancino engaging in sexual activity with a minor relative – a sickening discovery that underscored the severity of his offenses. Cancino has been in custody since the search and will be transferred to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility soon.

The court also ordered 10 years of supervised release following Cancino’s prison term, with strict requirements designed to limit his access to children and the internet. He will also be required to register as a sex offender. Restitution for any potential victims will be determined at a later date. This case highlights the pervasive threat of online child exploitation and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to combat it.

“Despite overseeing criminal investigations for thousands of child exploitation-related cases in my 30-year career, they never get easier,” said Chad Plantz, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) – Houston. “It’s thanks to those partnerships with fellow law enforcement agencies like the Corpus Christi Police Department…that we are able to quickly identify dangerous predators like Mr. Cancino.” The investigation was a joint effort by HSI and the Corpus Christi Police Department (CCPD).

This prosecution was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Overman prosecuted the case. PSC marshals federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children and rescue victims. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing fight against child exploitation.
