GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Brandon Mace, a Canton, Ohio resident, has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for a brazen tax scam while behind bars. The 35-year-old was caught filing nearly $5.5 million in false income tax refunds.
Mace, who pleaded guilty on February 27, 2013, before Judge Patricia A. Gaughan, claimed false tax refunds of $207,000 for 2008 and $5,292,000 for 2009. He was caught after the IRS sent him correspondence requesting an explanation for his lack of a supporting W-2 form, to which he replied with a hand-written letter containing a false excuse.
While Mace requested a non-prison sentence on several grounds, including his claim that he knew he would never receive any of the refunds, the government had already mailed the 2008 refund check to him at a Post Office box where he planned to retrieve it upon release. However, the Post Office returned the check to the government before Mace could collect it.
Judge Gaughan cited Mace’s extensive criminal record as a significant factor in imposing today’s sentence, which also includes time already served since his arrest on November 20, 2012.
The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Perry D. Mastrocola and Assistant United States Attorney John M. Siegel, following an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation.
This latest sentence in Canton’s ongoing battle against financial crimes underscores the government’s commitment to holding those who misuse the judicial system accountable for their actions.
