GRIM NEWS: Canton’s Nya Irving, a former Conduent Customer Service Representative, has pleaded guilty to siphoning Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits meant for impoverished families.
The 25-year-old, who was also known as Nya Carter, accessed and misused SNAP and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds between October and November 2023. Irving’s brazen scheme spanned across states including Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, and Tennessee.
According to court documents, the defendant exploited her position at Conduent from September 26, 2022, to November 20, 2023, to obtain over $41,587.87 in SNAP benefits and an additional $975.19 in TANF funds. Both programs are designed to aid low-income families in purchasing nutritious food.
Irving’s accomplice, Velton Taylor Williams, Jr., received five years’ probation for providing EBT card data to her, facilitating the theft. The duo funneled the stolen benefits into their personal coffers.
Sentencing for Irving is scheduled for December 9, 2025, where she faces up to 20 years in prison for Food Stamp Fraud.
The Southern District of Mississippi’s Acting U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Lemon and Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Deuchler of the USDA Office of Inspector General have announced the charges. The investigation is ongoing under Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly T. Purdie.
